Photos from Location Scouting in Shreveport, Louisiana

When making a movie, one of the first things we have to figure out is where the hell we're going to shoot.  As producer Ted Hope and I embark on our dream project, SUPER, we thought we'd start by location scouting Shreveport, Louisiana.  Ted and I spent three days there this week, driving around in a van for three days with Shreveport line producer Lampton Enochs, investigating local sites as potential places to shoot.  While doing that, I took hundreds of photographs.  In the interest of sharing with you guys the whole journey of making SUPER, I thought I'd share some of them here.

Why Louisiana?  Louisiana has amazing tax credits, which makes it more inexpensive to shoot there than almost anywhere else.  We're making SUPER on a very low budget, so that's important. Shreveport is a nice friendly town which bends over backwards to accommodate film crews (well, except the Hilton, which wouldn't give me late check out).

Also, Shreveport has an old section of urban downtown which is largely abandoned: this obviously isn't a great thing for Shreveport, but it's wonderful for film crews because it makes it easy and inexpensive to shoot in these rundown areas.  SUPER is a gritty film about people who've had it rough in life: our locations need to reflect that.

Producer Ted Hope poses with this sign which is surprisingly similar to his tattoo: "Bling, Gats, & Tunes."

….

HUMANZEE, the new web show from James Gunn and the guys who brought you PG PORN, is coming in just three days to Blip.tv!! Help spread the word!!!

The building with the awning is at the corner of Market and Milam Sts in downtown Shreveport. The awning IS over the entrance, but the entrance can’t be seen because it is actually a flight of steps down to the basement. If the photographer were a few steps further back where the ground was visible, it would be evident. The building houses a nightclub in the basement, to which this is the entrance. The main entrance to the building is from the streetfront to the left. The building is not bandoned nor is this part of downtown. It is in the heart of the central business district, though the photo doesn’t suggest that.

I am from Shreveport, and my brother used to work for Glorioso Casting. Thats so awesome you’ll be there. Your pics are crazy surreal looking by the way.
I’m going to see if I can be an extra just to get the chance to meet you.
If you ever want to know more ins and outs about the town, let me know.

They most likely bricked over the door where the awning is. It’s cheaper than repairing the door twice a week from vandals and homeless folks breaking in.

Wow, great photos there, James. Made my day.

Bonus! Now you know where to go to have the dead squirrels stuffed should another one die on your lawn.

I want to live in that little white house and I want to own that dog. How can we make this happen?

Those are some great shots, Jimmy – very evocative of the area, though “Southern” may not be a goal for your film. That small blue nightmare of a room with the toilet. Is that a jail cell?

reminds me a bit of where I’m living now, and the place where I graduated from. Denton is a two college town so it has alot of old buildings, some are rundown or made into something strange looking ( Denton is very hippy like) and I graduated from a small town just outside Denton ( I just say gaduated because I moved alot through North Texas until we finally where able to settle.) but on main street it looks like your driving through the 1940′s/50′s and, so I’ve been told, was used in 10 seconds of the movie Armageddon. there is a diner there that has since closed and remains closed that I’ve been so tempted to get some money to buy it and have it just for shooting stuff in. but it’s just a dream really. I pass by all these things and it makes me wish I could be a director so I could get these awsome things on film before the go away, as ALOT of things recently have done with the demolition of half of fry street and no more fry street fair :(
